My question is regarding the diagnosis coding of a Cesarean Section.

We have had cases in which a Cesarean Section had to be performed as there was obstructed labour due to malposition and malpresentation of fetus. In this case is the Cesarean an 'Emergency Cesarean', as it had to be performed or is it 'Elective', as it was planned once the obstructed labour was diagnosed?

HIO Team answers:

An emergency cesarean only is coded if the decision for a cesarean is done for medical reasons from one moment to the other.

Every cesarean which has been planned - either for medical reasons or for indivdual not medical reasons - is an elective cesarean.
